Schliesselburg. The key-city (or if literally, - a stronghold, the lock) - this place was named so by Peter I, after he had conquered an old Russian fortress “the Nut” from Swedes in 1702. The Swedes, who had been keeping it for almost hundred years, used to call the fortress Notteburg. Having taken hold of this "key", Peter opened to himself a way to the sea. But even at a first glance at the map, it becomes clear that the same “key” opens not only the gateway to the sea but also to an internal water system of Russia. And this strategic position of the town city was taken into account, when two hundred years later another Russian tsar, Nikolai II, going towards a developing navigation, issued  the decree about the establishment in Schliesselburg the ship-repair workshops which  gave rise to our factory.

November, 6th, 1913 is considered to be the Date of a birth of the Nevsky Shipbuilding-Shiprepair Plant, when constructed under the decree of tsar Shlisselburg ship-repair workshops were opened. Shop repair of that time is characterized by hard hand work and primitive technology. Power-plant included just one locomobile of 26 horse-power capacity that set in motion all machines. Turning shop, toolroom and boiler-room were situated in one building.
After the Revolution of 1917 repair workshops were transmitted under the jurisdiction of a State Northwest River Shipping Company. Old shops were converted, new ones were plotted and replenished with equipment and machine tools.
The process of growth and expansion of Nevsky Yard was quite complicated, as well as of all country. The factory explicated, repair of vessels became more complicated, repair of boilers, manufacture of ship gears was initiated.
In the first post-war years many aspects of machine industry were initiated slip equipment, the steam-air hammers, steam pumps, injectors.
In 1950 the slip-way, allowing to rise and repair vessels of average capacity, was also constructed.

In 1952 Nevsky Shipbuilding-Shiprepair Plant opened a new page of its history - after the keel laying of passenger motor ship "Leningradets" factory began serial shipbuilding and this direction became basic for the Yard.
More than 260 vessels of a various class and purposes have been constructed the next years: from small passenger vessels to tows and vessels of a "river-sea" class including 132 tow-pushers of the project 887À, 38 cargo steam-ships with carrying capacity of 2700 tons for transportation of bulk cargoes.

For the same time many aspects of machine industry have been mastered: steering hydraulic machines, whips and dollies for shipways, machines for shipbuilding. Large experience in production of ship’s devices and the equipment was gained: shafts, rudderstocks, steering nozzles, rudders, ship doors, and replaceable-spare parts for engines.
The ship-way for simultaneous repair of 15 ships of large capacity was fitted out. New shops appeared: assembling shop, sleeve shop. The construction of a covered slipway was initiated.
Ship-repair, the most traditional direction of the activity of the plant, was not forgotten. A large group of vessels was allotted to the plant for a constant technical maintenance, which implied the fulfillment of the complete complex of works on the maintenance of the proper technical state of vessels both during the navigation and non-navigating period. Diesel shop repaired the engines of two standard sizes for the entire river branch.
Considerable attention was paid to the social sphere. Plant was the so-called “town-forming enterprise” for its town.  The Yard carried on intensive building of apartment houses and units of social sphere, about 90 % of housing and social fund of Shliesselburg has been built using the resources of the Yard: the house of culture, a swimming pool, school, hospital, a polyclinic, kindergartens and dozens of apartment houses.
And then there was time of "perestroika”, slump in production, attempts with variable success to survive. At the same time the Shipyard managed to preserve basic production capacities.
In 2003 new shareholders of “North Western Shipping Company” took course on renovation. More than 15 mln US dollars were invested in modernization of the production, and today “Nevsky Shipbuilding-Shiprepair Plant” follows the way of revival and development of the traditions of shipbuilding, ship-repair and machine building with confidence.
